A new generation of roads are being introduced to satisfy user demands for unrestricted travel on a network that is equipped with an increasing number of services. To achieve this, roads and bridges must be maintained without disrupting traffic and withstand harsh climatic events whilst meeting safety and environmental sustainability targets. These sometimes conflicting goals require rethinking key engineering considerations in the design, delivery and management of road networks.
