A Valparaiso University graduate in Civil Engineering, Ms. Avery has 29 years of experience at Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), as a registered professional engineer with the State of Michigan.  
As Director of the Bureau of Field Services, Ms. Avery is responsible for overseeing MDOT's statewide maintenance, construction, pavement selections, research program, emergency response, traffic and safety, ITS program, autonomous & connected vehicle program, and safety & security operations.  She is responsible for 9,668 miles of state roadway, 4,775 bridges,  $1.2 Billion yearly construction program, and $300 million yearly maintenance program.
In addition, Ms. Avery is active Nationally with the American Association of State Transportation Officials (AASHTO), serving on the; Streets and Highways Committee, Research and Innovation Committee, Transportation Safety, Security, and Resilience Committee, Lawrence Tech University Civil Engineering Advisory Board, Women in Transportation (Michigan) Board Member, and COMTO National Scholarship Committee Chair. She served as Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO)-Chapter President in 2017-2018. She is involved with several initiatives and teams, including the Autonomous and Connected Vehicle Program, the Strategic Planning Committee, and the Commercial Vehicle Steering Team. She is an MDOT Director's Award winner, recipient of the National Partnership for Highway Quality Partnering's 2008 Gold Award for the I-94/US-24 interchange, and 2017 COMTO Chapter of the Year Award.  In March 2016 Ms. Avery was named among the nation’s top fourteen (14) transportation professionals as a “Women Who Moves the Nation”, by the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials in Washington, DC.
